Grant Eligibility
To be eligible for a grant in Alberta, you must:
1. be a resident of Alberta
If you are an independent student, you are considered to be a resident of Alberta if:
- Alberta is the last province you have lived in for 12 consecutive months while not a full-time post-secondary student, or
- you are attending school in Alberta and have never lived in any Canadian province for 12 months in a row. In this case, attach a letter to your application to explain your residency situation
If you are a dependent student, you are considered to be a resident of Alberta if:
- your parent(s) live in Alberta

2. meet the eligibility criteria for grants
Each type of grant has its own eligibility criteria. When you apply for student funding, your financial need is calculated based on the information you provide and your eligibility for grants is automatically assessed.
3. be enrolled as a full-time student
You may be considered a full-time student if:
What is considered full-time studies may vary with each post-secondary institution. Contact your post-secondary institution to determine what is considered a full course load.

What if I Received a Grant Overpayment?
If you have been notified that you received a grant overpayment, you are responsible to pay back the overpayment. Please refer to the Understanding your Overpayment information sheet for details about the repayment process and your obligations regarding your overpayment.
If your overpayment is determined as a result of:
- a reassessment of your application, contact the Student Funding Contact Centre if you have questions about your reassessment
- an audit of your application, contact Program Compliance and Investigations, Learner Assistance, to discuss the audit findings and appeal deadlines.
