Scholarship and Bursary Information

Persons Case Scholarships



Sponsored by: Established in 1979 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the "Persons Case". These scholarships honour the efforts of five Alberta women: Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, and Henrietta Muir Edwards, who fought and won the right for the women of Canada to be officially deemed "persons" under the law.

Purpose: To assist students whose studies will ultimately contribute to the advancement of women, or who are studying in fields where members of their gender are traditionally few in number.

Value: Up to $5,000

Eligibility: Applicants must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident and be a resident of Alberta for three years immediately before starting your  full-time studies.  Must be enrolled full-time, in the current academic year (September to April) at a post-secondary institution in Alberta. In addition, applicants must be enrolled in a program that is either non-traditional for their sex, or a program that will contribute to the advancement of women. Students studying out-of-province may be considered for this award if their program of study is not available in Alberta.

Selection: Recipients are chosen by a selection committee. Selection is based on program of studies, academic achievement and financial need.

Disbursement: All applicants will be notified of the results of the competition by December 1. Recipients may expect to receive their award in late December after Alberta Scholarship Programs confirms full-time enrollment in post-secondary studies.
