Environment-Related Occupational Profiles


Many occupational profiles decribe occupations in which people may be involved in protecting the environment. Following are three lists:

  1. profiles about occupations directly involved in monitoring or assessing the environmental impact of industrial processes or projects, or educating people about environment-related issues
  2. profiles about occupations in which people may do environment-related work
  3. indirectly related profiles about occupations in which people may work for organizations in the environment industry.
Monitoring, Assessing and Educating
Earth Loop TechnicianEmerging Occupation
This is an emerging occupation. It may have evolved from an existing occupation or emerged in response to consumer needs or technological advances. In general, earth loop technicians set up and operate the mobile rotary boring rigs used to prepare sites for closed loop geothermal systems.
Ecologist

Ecologists study the interactions between living things and their environment to understand how natural and human-caused changes in the environment influence the behaviour and abundance of species and how interactions between species and their environment influence the natural world.

Environmental Auditor

Environmental auditors assess the environmental performance of operations in business and industry.

Environmental EconomistEmerging Occupation
This is an emerging occupation. It may have evolved from an existing occupation or emerged in response to consumer needs or technological advances. In general, environmental economists conduct research and analyze economic information, quantify the benefits of environmental alternatives such as use of renewable energy resources and prepare reports and plans.
Environmental Engineer

Environmental engineers design and evaluate systems, processes and equipment for air, water and soil pollution assessment, prevention and control, solid and hazardous waste management, and remediation of contaminated sites.

Hazardous Waste Management Technologist

Hazardous waste management technologists provide information and advice on the packaging, handling and disposal of toxic wastes; conduct inspections and waste audits; investigate environmental incidents; and monitor and control the clean-up of contaminated land, water and air.

Pollution Control Technologist

Pollution control technologists conduct inspections, tests and field investigations to determine the extent of existing air, water or soil contamination and find ways to control and prevent contamination.

Sustainability SpecialistEmerging Occupation
This is an emerging occupation. It may have evolved from an existing occupation or emerged in response to consumer needs or technological advances. In general, sustainability specialists address issues such as waste stream management, green building practices and green procurement practices in organizations and communities.

Agricultural Engineer

Agricultural engineers integrate engineering science and design with applied biological science to solve problems in agriculture, food and other resource industries.

Alternative Energy TechnologistEmerging Occupation

This is an emerging occupation. It may have evolved from an existing occupation or emerged in response to consumer needs or technological advances. In general, alternative energy technologists work with engineers, designers and installers to design, plan and manage the installation of alternative energy systems (for example solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, geo-exchange, wind, micro-hydro, carbon capture and storage, bio fuel or fuel cell).

Biochemist

Biochemists study the chemical make-up and products of living matter, and the processes that occur in and between cells at the molecular level. They develop medical, agricultural, food science, pharmacological, industrial, environmental and other practical applications of biochemistry.

Biological Technician

Biological technicians perform routine analysis and technical duties in the field, in the laboratory or both. They provide technical support and services for scientists and engineers working in fields such as agriculture, environmental science, resource management, plant and animal biology, microbiology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and health sciences.

Biologist

Biologists conduct research to learn more about living organisms and ecosystems, manage natural resources, and develop new practices and products in such diverse fields as environmental conservation, medicine, pharmacology, forestry, forensics, nanotechnology, biosynthesis and pest control.

Biotechnologist

Biotechnologists apply their knowledge of biochemistry, microbiology and molecular genetics to improve industrial processes and develop new processes in the agricultural, chemical and health care product industries (for example, in the production of drugs, antibiotics or vaccines).

Chemical Engineer

Chemical engineers conduct research; develop and optimize processes; design and select equipment; and provide technical and management services for plants that convert raw materials into a wide range of end products (for example, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food products, fuels, plastics, metals).

Chemical Engineering Technologist

Chemical engineering technologists are involved in process design, plant engineering, environmental control, engineering sales and plant operations.

Chemical TechnologistUpdate

Chemical technologists may work independently or with a team of chemists, chemical engineers and related professionals involved in quality control testing, product research and development, or environmental analysis.

ChemistUpdate

Chemists research the properties, composition and principles of elements and compounds, and apply chemical principles to developing a wide range of products and processes. For example, they may develop new fuels, catalysts, polymers, pharmaceutical products or foods, or work in the oil and gas industry.

Civil Engineer

Civil engineers plan, design and supervise the construction, maintenance and decommissioning of a wide variety of public and private structures and facilities.

Civil Engineering Technologist

Civil engineering technologists work with engineers, architects, surveyors and contractors to design, develop and build civil engineering projects that are economical and functional, and satisfy applicable standards and building codes.

Community Planner

Community planners study the social, economic, cultural, environmental, political and physical conditions of urban and rural communities, and develop plans for the overall management and protection of specific land parcels or regions.

Conservation OfficerUpdate

Conservation officers manage resources, visitor services, maintenance and recreation in provincial parks and educate the public about related issues.

Electronics Recycling WorkerEmerging Occupation

This is an emerging occupation. It may have evolved from an existing occupation or emerged in response to consumer needs or technological advances. Electronics recycling workers take electronics apart to salvage reusable materials and dispose of hazardous waste in a safe manner.

Entomologist

Entomologists study the classification, biodiversity, life cycles and ecology of insects and other arthropods, and plan and implement surveys and pest management programs.

Food Science Technologist

Food science technologists work independently or provide technical support in laboratory analysis, food product development, processing, quality assurance or regulatory positions.

Food Scientist

Food scientists investigate the chemical, microbiological, physical and sensory nature of food, and apply their knowledge in the development, processing, preserving, packaging, distributing and storing of foodstuffs.

Forest TechnicianUpdate

Forest technicians perform technical functions related to forest management, forest protection, silviculture, harvesting and conservation.

Forest TechnologistUpdate

Forest technologists perform many of the technical functions involved in the scientific management of forested areas.

Forester

Foresters plan, administer and direct programs related to managing forested lands and related renewable resources.

Geneticist

Geneticists study how genes function to produce cells and organisms, and how hereditary traits and mutations are passed through generations. The role of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is central to this study.

Geographer

Geographers study the surface of the earth as the home of human kind. They may focus on physical properties of the earth, or the human or built environment.

Geological and Geophysical Technologist

Geological and geophysical technologists apply their knowledge of the study of the Earth in exploration, production and management. They may work independently or with a team of geologists, geophysicists, mining engineers or petroleum engineers.

Geologist

Geologists apply their knowledge of the Earth's crust in exploring for minerals and hydrocarbons (for example, oil and gas), developing resources for production, building engineering foundations and stable slopes, and finding and evaluating ground water supplies. 

Geomatics Engineer

Geomatics engineers gather, model, analyze and manage spatially referenced data (information identified according to location).

Geomatics Technologist

Geomatics technologists conduct or participate in field surveys, office calculations and plan production to determine the exact locations and relative positions of natural features and human-made structures on the earth's surface, underground and underwater.

Geotechnical Engineer

Geotechnical engineers assess the natural foundations for engineering projects that are supported by rock or soil. They plan and supervise geological data acquisition and analysis, and prepare engineering designs, reports and recommendations.

Hydrologist

Hydrologists study the occurrence, distribution, circulation and properties of water in the atmosphere, on the Earth's surface, and in soil and underlying rocks.

Hydrometric Technician and Technologist

Hydrometric technicians and technologists may work independently or provide technical support for hydrologists and related scientists and engineers.

Interpretive NaturalistUpdate

Interpretive naturalists explain the natural and scientific features of parks, botanical gardens and wilderness areas to visitors.

Landfill Gas Plant OperatorEmerging Occupation

This is an emerging occupation. It may have evolved from an existing occupation or emerged in response to consumer needs or technological advances.

Landfill gas plant operators control automated processes that convert methane gas from landfills to fuel used to generate electricity.

Meteorologist

Meteorologists study the physics, chemistry and dynamics of the atmosphere and its interaction with land and water surfaces, weather, climate, climate change and their effect on people's health and safety, the economy and the earth's ecosystems.

Microbiologist

Microbiologists study the growth and characteristics of micro-organisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites) and their interactions with their environment, and develop medical and industrial applications (for example, in the food processing industry).

Municipal Recycling Truck Driver

Municipal recycling truck drivers collect, sort and transport recyclable waste materials such as glass, plastic, metal and paper.

Municipal Recycling Waste Handler

Municipal recycling waste handlers sort recyclable domestic and commercial waste materials such as glass, plastic, metal and paper.

Oceanographer

Oceanographers study all aspects of oceans including their boundaries, contents and role in the earth's climate system.

Park WardenUpdate

Park wardens are responsible for natural and cultural resource management, public safety and law enforcement in Canada's national parks, marine conservation areas and historic sites.

Pathologist

Pathologists are physicians who provide key laboratory diagnostic services. By examining tissues, blood or other body fluids, pathologists assist other physicians in the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, blood disorders and infections.

Pharmacologist

Pharmacologists are biomedical scientists who investigate the mechanisms underlying the effects of drugs and chemicals on living systems. They use this knowledge to help design and evaluate chemical agents for the prevention and treatment of disease.

Physicist

Physicists investigate why our physical environment behaves as it does and solve technological problems.

Physiologist

Physiologists are scientists who study the whole organism and cellular function in humans, animals and plants.

Public Health Inspector

Public health inspectors identify and evaluate immediate and potential health hazards, and promote human health through consultation, education and enforcement of legislation.

Soil Scientist

Soil scientists study the composition, distribution, development and behaviour of soils, the interaction of soils with organisms, animals and plants, and the management of soil resources for agricultural production and environmental protection.

Toxicologist

Toxicologists investigate the possible harmful effects on living things of chemical agents (for example, drugs, pesticides, food additives, industrial chemicals), biological agents (for example, plant and animal toxins) and physical agents (for example, ionizing and electro-magnetic radiation).

Water and Wastewater OperatorUpdate

Water and wastewater operators monitor and operate control systems and equipment in water and wastewater treatment plants, and water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Wind Turbine TechnicianEmerging Occupation

This is an emerging occupation. It may have evolved from an existing occupation or emerged in response to consumer needs or technological advances. In general, wind turbine technicians inspect, diagnose, adjust, repair and maintain wind turbines. This may involve resolving electrical, mechanical and hydraulic malfunctions.
