Computer-Related Occupational Profiles


Many occupational profiles describe work related to designing, installing and servicing computer systems and other types of digital equipment. Following are four lists:

  1. profiles about occupations directly related to designing, installing and maintaining computer systems
  2. profiles about occupations that involve assembling, installing or servicing other types of digital equipment
  3. profiles about occupations involved in teaching others how to design, install and maintain computer technology

Automated Systems Technologist

Automated systems technologists analyze, implement, maintain and design electromechanical (automated) systems. These systems often include mechanical components, sensors, actuators and control systems, and may include stationary or mobile robots.

Biomedical Engineer

Biomedical engineers study, design, develop and evaluate biological and medical systems and products such as artifical organs, prostheses, medical instruments and information systems.

Computer EngineerUpdate

Computer engineers design, implement, evaluate, modify, maintain and test computer systems and related equipment.

Computer Network Administrator

Computer network administrators plan, establish, operate, maintain and support the use of local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), mainframe networks and related hardware, software and peripheral equipment.

Computer Programmer

Computer programmers create, modify and test the forms, scripts and code that tell computers what to do.

Computer Service Technician

Customer support analysts answer computer related questions, investigate complaints and work with others in a team environment to resolve users' software and hardware problems.

Data Administrator

Data administrators manage and organize electronic data, and develop and implement data administration policy, standards and models.

Database Analyst

Database analysts design, develop, modify and maintain database management systems to meet specific user needs.

Electronics Engineering TechnologistUpdate

Electronics engineering technologists apply the practical skills and theoretical principles of electronics to the development of electronic based circuits and the installation and servicing of electronic equipment and systems.

Engineering Physicist

Engineering physicists use scientific and engineering principles to solve problems and develop new processes, products and technologies.

Interactive Media ProgrammerUpdate

Interactive media programmers write, modify, integrate and test computer code for Internet applications, computer based training software, computer games, film, video and other interactive media.

Software EngineerUpdate

Systems AuditorUpdate

Systems auditors conduct reviews to assess the quality of software products, applications and information systems (including hardware, networks and facilities) that make up the internal control systems of an organization.

Systems Security Analyst

Systems security analysts are computer specialists who assess administrative, physical and technical security risks to information, software and hardware; and develop policies, procedures and contingency plans to detect, prevent or minimize the effects of security breaches and concerns.

Systems Tester

Systems testers create and execute test plans to evaluate the performance of computer software, information systems and telecommunication systems.

Web Designer

Web designers create websites for the Internet and intranet sites that are internal to their organizations.

Web Technician

Web technicians set up and maintain Internet and intranet websites and web server hardware and software, and monitor and optimize network connectivity and performance.

Webmaster

Webmasters are responsible for the design, development, maintenance and success of Internet and intranet websites.

College, Technical or Vocational Instructor

College, technical and vocational instructors provide instruction to adults in a wide variety of subject areas including vocational, technical, business or services training, trades, academic upgrading, university transfer courses and university degree program courses.

Private Trainer/Facilitator

Private trainers and facilitators conduct workshops, seminars, retreats, conference sessions and individual coaching sessions for young people and adults. They also may develop, design and evaluate training programs, curricula and materials.

University Professor

University professors are employed by degree-granting institutions to teach and produce works of art or conduct research and publish their research findings.
