Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition
What is PLAR?
PLAR is a process of identifying, assessing and recognizing skills, competencies, knowledge and formal learning to facilitate the transfer of skills and knowledge of individuals into further learning and work.
PLAR enables individuals to complete a portfolio of their entire learning experiences, which may lead them to
- identifying a career path
- identifying courses to enroll in or
- receiving formal recognized credit at a post-secondary institution for their prior learning.
PLAR portfolios can be powerful tools in helping individuals
- identify themselves as learners
- recognize their own competencies
- avoid duplicating learning for which they have already demonstrated competency
- expedite transitions into formal education.
They are intended to encourage engagement in further learning and work.
