How is your personal information protected?
The encryption we use during your Students Finance Online Application session to transmit your personal data is based on the North American industry standard to prevent the risk of the information being intercepted and read by a third party.
Once your data has been stored in our database, it is further protected by a product known as an "Internet firewall." The firewall is a combination of hardware and software designed to securely separate the internet from our internal computer systems and databases.
How can you protect your personal information?
The best way to ensure the security of your personal information is to follow the practices below:
- Do not share any of your personal information with anyone else
- Do not leave your computer unattended while logged on to any web based application
- Always log off when you are finished using any web based application and clear out the computer's cache. Every time you use the internet your browser automatically saves a copy of the web pages you have accessed. Clearing out the computer's cache after your session is an important step to keeping your personal information safe.
How do I clear my browser's cache?
PC Instructions for Internet Explorer Users:
- Select "Tools" from the pull-down menu (IE 5.01 SP2 or higher)
- Select "Internet Options"
- In the second section where it says "Temporary Internet Files", click on the "Delete Files" button, check (
) the option for "Delete all offline content", then click "OK".
- When clearing is complete (ie. when hourglass returns to mouse pointer), click "OK".
For General Computer Security
- Be sure to scan your computer with an updated version of antivirus software
- Consider using a personal firewall
- In order that your home network remains private and secure, ensure that you have changed the default password associated with your router
- Update your PC's operating system and the browser with security patches on a regular basis
- Avoid using software that "memorizes" your passwords. It's convenient but someone else may be able to use it.
- Avoid leaving your computer unattended while secure sessions are running
