Graduate School Admission and Application Process

Although specific admission requirements are different for each school and program, the following may be required:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree with a minimum grade point average
  • Reference letters from previous professors and employers
  • Written documents, such as a statement of intent or purpose, resumé and statement of intended research
  • Specific language requirements
  • Completion of an entrance exam

Always confirm specific graduate requirements and deadlines with your program of interest.

Before you apply

There are several steps you can take to build a stronger application and prepare the written documentation you may need to apply to a graduate program:

  • Attend conferences, events and presentations to increase your knowledge and expertise in your area of interest.
  • Research your program of study before you apply and begin your written statement of intent.
  • Review details of the program you're applying for and research projects currently being conducted by professors and current students.
  • If your program requires working with a supervisor, make contact with potential supervisors to discuss your research interests and to confirm the possibility of working with them.
  • Check the admission requirements for your specific program. Each institution and program will have specific admission requirements.

Preparing your written statement

A written statement is your opportunity to prove you have the skills and experience to be accepted into your program of interest. It is also your opportunity to clearly identify why you are interested in a specific program and how it relates to your goals.

Your statement should clearly indicate:

  • The reason you're interested in this program of studies
  • Related research projects, volunteer, travel and employment experience
  • Awards, scholarships, publications or achievements in your area of study
  • Aspirations and career goals related to your area of study

Applying on time

  • Although each program will have different application deadlines, plan to have your application(s) completed almost a year before you intend to study. Most applicants beginning studies in the fall should apply by mid-fall the previous year.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to prepare your application(s). Preparing a written statement, asking for reference letters and sending your transcripts is time consuming.
