Resumés that Fit the Job

Tailoring your resumé to fit each job you apply for increases your chances of getting an interview. Tailoring your resumé means rewriting it to highlight the skills, experience and training you have that match what the employer is asking for and give only information that is relevant. Doing this shows the employer that you place a high priority on their needs.

How to tailor your resumé:

  • Create a resumé master  using descriptions of your employment history, skills, accomplishments and experience.
  • Learn everything you can about the organization—this will help you understand the job requirements from the employer’s point of view.
  • Choose the resumé type best suited to the position and your needs.
  • Use headings. Arrange them to highlight the most relevant qualifications for the job.
  • Place the relevant information from your resumé master under the appropriate headings.
  • Use keywords  or phrases similar to those in the job ad or posting to describe your qualifications.
