Informal learning opportunities can also be a valuable source of hands-on experience and information:

  • Ask the people in your network to help you connect with informal learning opportunities. A friend or family member may be willing to teach you a skill you need. Examples include using a computer program or operating a power tool.
  • Check out the article Find and Work with a Mentor. A mentor is an experienced, trusted advisor. This person will support, guide and encourage you in your career. You may be able to connect with a mentor informally, through your network.
  • Travel offers plenty of opportunities to learn. Many employers and post-secondary institutions consider overseas experience to be an asset. Check out these links to learn more about studying abroad and working abroad.
