Using news sources and directories to find work

An experienced chef reads about a major oil and gas project in an online news feed. Large scale projects, from pipelines to tourist attractions, usually means an increase in job openings—construction and management positions for the projects, as well as positions in support companies that service the project such as accounting, catering, and cleaning services. The chef uses his network to find out which catering companies will be bidding on service contracts for the project. He contacts these companies directly.
