Located in downtown Calgary, Bow Valley College is Calgary and region’s only comprehensive community college and serves more than 15,000 full-time and part-time students. Programs and courses — in class, online, part-time, full-time, and blended — are offered at campuses in downtown Calgary and at seven regional centres throughout southern Alberta. The new South Campus opened in May 2013, and along with classroom and student spaces, it also includes the Calgary campuses for the University of Lethbridge, Athabasca University, and Olds College.

The College offers one-year certificates and two-year diplomas for programs in the Chiu School of Business, the School of Health and Wellness, the School of Community Studies, and the School of Creative Technologies. The College also has a post-diploma certificate program in Health and Human Services Management, with three more post-diploma certificate programs available in 2017-2018. Programs are also offered in English Language Learning through the Centre for Excellence in Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement, and academic upgrading through the Centre for Excellence in Foundational Learning.

Bow Valley College offers a wide range of continuing education courses and workplace training services. Career planning and assessment services are also made available to thousands of Albertans every year.

Funding is available through an extensive financial aid and awards program. College advisors help students with planning and funding applications. Year-round entry for many programs allows students to begin studies at their convenience.

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements:

  • Minimum final mark of 60% in English 30-1 or 70% in English 30-2 or equivalent
  • Credit in Math 20-1 or a minimum final mark of 60% in Math 20-2 or equivalent
  • Minimum final mark of 60% in Biology 30 or a minimum final mark of 60% in Anatomy and Physiology (ANPH 150) at Bow Valley College or equivalent.

Applicants may complete Anatomy and Physiology (ANPH 150) at Bow Valley College before the program starts either in-class through Continuing Education or online through eCampus pending availability. Applicants may be eligible for Transfer Credit in Semester One if they achieve a grade of C (65%) or higher and submit a Request for Transfer Credit Form to the Registrar's Office at least one month before the first day of classes. Please note that Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing Programs might not accept ANPH 150 in place of 30-level science courses.

If an applicant is a graduate from a Health Care Aide program (provincial curriculum) or equivalent, admission requirements are:
  • Minimum final mark of 60% in English 30-1 or 70% in English 30-2 or equivalent
  • Credit in Math 20-1 or a minimum final mark of 60% in Math 20-2 or equivalent

If an applicant is an internationally educated nurse, admission requirements are:

  • Minimum final mark of 60% in English 30-1 or 70% in English 30-2 or equivalent
  • Credit in Math 20-1 or a minimum final mark of 60% in Math 20-2 or equivalent
  • Minimum final mark of 60% in Biology 30
  • Credit in medical terminology at Bow Valley College or equivalent
*Applicants will be granted advanced standing if they have a recognized Health Care Aide certificate, international nursing degree.

Other Requirements:

Students who do not meet the following requirements before the first day of clinical will not be allowed to participate in clinical placements under any circumstances:

  • CPR Healthcare Provider Level Certificate must be updated every 12 months
  • Immunization Requirements: Details about immunizations are provided after being accepted into a health care program. Up-to-date immunizations are valid for the duration of the program.

English Language Proficiency Requirements:

In addition to academic requirements, applicants whose first language is NOT English must demonstrate ONE of the following:

  • IELTS with a minimum band score of listening 7.5, reading 6.5, writing 7.0, and speaking 7.0
  • TOEFL score of 92
  • BVC Academic English 2 with a grade of ‘B’
  • Canadian Language Benchmarks score of 8 in each strand
  • Successful completion of an Alberta Education English Language Arts course that is consistent with the specified academic admission requirements for the Career Program
  • Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of three years of full-time secondary education at a school where English was the language of instruction
  • Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of one year of full-time post secondary education at a school where English was the language of instruction
