Established in 1968, Portage College serves over 1,000 full-time students each year. The corporate centre is located in Lac La Biche, with regional service centres in Cold Lake and St. Paul, and community campuses in Frog Lake, Saddle Lake, and Boyle. 

Portage offers more than 50 certificate and diploma programs in areas such as academic upgrading and job readiness, business, forestry and natural resources, general studies, health and wellness, human services, Native cultural arts, trades and technical, and university studies. In addition, many courses transfer to other colleges and universities.

Portage College provides small class sizes to allow more time with instructors. The Learning Assistance Centre offers educational support to help students achieve academic success. The Lac La Biche campus includes a student residence, full service cafeteria, family housing, and a student activity centre. The College is a strong competitor in ice hockey, and offers recreational facilities for students, as well.

Admission Requirements

Program Description: Health Care Aide is an entry level program which prepares individuals to function as an essential member of a health care team. Health Care Aides assist professional nurses in providing care for clients of various ages across the lifespan in many different health care environments, including hospitals, continuing and community care facilities and home care. As a Health Care Aide, you will help clients with daily living activities, assist with assessments and prescribed medical treatments and create a safe, caring and comfortable environment. Portage College delivers the Government of Alberta Health Care Aide curriculum. The program is designed as a blended model of delivery which includes: paced independent study and on-line instruction, on-site lab instruction, as well as instructor-led and preceptor-led practicums in a health care setting. Students may apply to receive credit for related experience by accessing the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Process. Part-time learners may also take individual courses for fulfillment of continuing education requirements if applicable.

Entrance Requirements: Successful completion of Grade 10 English or equivalent. Criminal record waiver, immunization waiver, statement of good mental and physical health.

Practicum Requirements: Following admission, students are required to meet all practicum pre-requisites prior to placement (including a criminal record check no greater than 3 months prior to practicum and appropriate immunization). Students are responsible for their own transportation to orientation, first and second weeks of lab skill days and practicum placements.

Computer Requirememts: Access to a computer with CD ROM, printer and Internet access. Basic Hardware Requirements: Pentium class platform with windows NT or XP. Basic Software Requirements: MS Word, Anti Virus Software. Basic knowledge of word processing, file management, email and Internet navigation.
