Legislation

Apprenticeship and Industry Training Actand Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operator Trade Regulation, you must have a certificate that is recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training or be a registered apprentice to operate a boom truck, tower crane or mobile crane in Alberta.

What You Need

In Alberta, each branch in this trade has different apprenticeship requirements. For example, wellhead boom truck operator apprentices must complete 100 hours of on-the-job training and five days of technical training within one year (12 month period). Boom truck operator apprentices must complete 1,200 hours of on-the-job training and five or six weeks of technical training within one year. The term of apprenticeship for tower crane operators is two years and for mobile crane operators is three years. Apprentices must find suitable employers who are willing to hire and train apprentices, and successfully complete technical training examinations.

Working in Alberta

Crane and hoisting equipment operators from other provinces and territories can work in Alberta if they hold a certificate or license recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board. For more information, see the Recognized Trade Certificates page of the Tradesecrets website.
