Legislation

Under Alberta’s Securities Act [pdf], you must be registered with the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) or an ASC-delegated organization to deal in and advise on securities, and to manage investment funds and portfolios.

You must also be employed by a registered firm.

What You Need

In Alberta, dealing representatives can only deal in the types of securities included in the category they are registered for. Individuals may register for more than one category at a time.

To register as a dealing representative for exempt market products, you need to successfully complete any 1 of the following:

To register as a dealing representative for scholarship plans (i.e. registered education savings plans), you need to successfully complete the Dealing Representative Proficiency Course.

Dealing representatives for exempt market products and scholarship plans must register directly with the ASC.

Dealing representatives who work in firms that are registered with the ASC-delegated Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) in the investment dealer or mutual fund dealer categories include:

  • Dealing representatives of mutual fund dealers who are authorized to purchase and sell mutual funds

  • Registered representatives of investment dealers (i.e. investment brokers) who are authorized to provide investment advice on all types of securities and investment products

  • Investment representatives of investment dealers who are authorized to trade all types of securities and investment products but cannot provide investment advice

To register, you must successfully complete 1 or more CIRO proficiency exams and other requirements.

Dealing representatives working for investment dealer or mutual fund dealer firms must register with the ASC-delegated CIRO.

For details about all registration requirements, contact the ASC or CIRO, or visit their websites.

Working in Alberta

Dealing representatives who are registered by and in good standing with a securities regulatory body elsewhere in Canada may be eligible for registration in Alberta.

For more information, see What if I am already certified in another province or territory in Canada? and the ASC or CIRO websites.

The certification information in this profile may change at any time and without notice. Before making any career decisions, we advise you to contact the regulatory organization or visit their website for the most updated information.
