“I'm a part-time student. Can I get student loans?”

Answer

Yes! Part-time students may be eligible for loans and grants from the Canadian government. When you apply for a Canada student loan, you are automatically considered for grants.

A grant is free money. You don’t need to pay it back. A loan is money you will eventually have to repay.

Part-time students are not eligible for loans from the Alberta government. However, if you are not eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies, you may qualify for the Alberta Part-Time Grant.

For student loan purposes, you are considered a part-time student:

§  if you are taking less than 60% of what your school considers a full-time course load

§  if you have a disability and you are taking less than 40% of what your school considers a full-time course load

To get a student loan for part-time studies, you’ll need to apply through Alberta Student Aid:

1.   Download the part-time application form, save it to your computer, and open it with Adobe Reader.

2.   Use your computer to complete the required information in sections 1 through 4 and 6 through 8. Save and print your file.

3.   Have the Awards Officer or Registrar’s Office at your school complete and sign section 5 of your form.

4.   Mail in or upload your completed application according to the instructions on the form.

Tips

§  The part-time application form is a fillable PDF file. It may not open properly on some mobile devices and web browsers.

§  Your application must be submitted as a single, complete document. Do not submit Section 5 and Section 8 separately.

§  Your application form requires original signatures. If you are submitting electronically, you will need to print out, sign, scan, and upload the relevant pages.
