There’s a lot to think about to get a business off the ground. Before you dive in, take some time to figure out if self-employment is for you. Are you drawn to innovation? Are you a risk taker? A self-starter? Do you like solving problems? Do you enjoy doing things that have never been done before? Do you have the traits and attitudes you’ll need to succeed?
If you’re set on starting a business, you’ll need to come up with an idea that will succeed. Figure out if there’s a demand for your product or service. Do some market research to learn what customers want, what they are willing to pay, and who your competitors are. Then do some SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in your marketplace.
That’s just for starters.
If you want to launch your own business, you’ll need to have systems, policies, and processes in place to deal with all of the following:
- Strategy and planning
- Money and financing
- Marketing and sales, including branding and customer service
- Staffing
- Operations, including licensing, insurance, and inventory management
- Technology, including business websites and software
- Sustainability
