Christina is one of six amazing members on the Lac La Biche crew for 2025!
Tell us a bit about yourself!
Hi! My name is Christina and I am from Edson. I am currently sixteen years old and about to go into my last year of high school. I love all things involving nature, but I am specifically a big fan of moss, mountains, and bees. Back in Edson, I am a dedicated volunteer within my school and local community, as I am a proud member of the Edson Youth Council. Some of my interests include ecology, theatre, wildlife conservation, and astronomy! I have a passion for science and art, and I love learning new things.
What has been your favorite project or activity you’ve done with JFR so far?
My favourite activity that I have done with JFR so far is the wetland ecology tour that our crew in Lac La Biche went on this past Monday. We got the opportunity to travel to ALPAC mill, and gain knowledge from professionals within the forestry and ecology sector. They brought us to a few wetland locations within the area, and we learned about the different kinds of vegetation, soil, and organisms that exist in wetlands. It was a very informative first day.
Please describe your JFR leaders with a pop culture/musical reference / meme and explain why.
My JFR leaders remind me of the song “what you know” by two door cinema club. This is because they are all so optimistic, energetic, funny, and outgoing. They captivate the vibe of the song with their combined enthusiasm. They know how to make you laugh, as well as how to make sure you’re putting in all of your effort into what you’re doing, and because of that, they are a perfect human representation of this song!
What would you say to someone who is thinking about applying to the program?
For those wanting to apply to the JFR program, I would say DO IT!! This experience has already been so eye opening and memorable, and we are only two weeks in! It is an excellent opportunity for those who are passionate about nature, the outdoors, and who love to challenge themselves. You get to meet so many amazing people with similar interests. It provides you with a great connection to forestry and wildfire, allowing you to explore and experience all the different career possibilities within those sectors. Also, you get to use some really fun tools like pulaskis and brushsaws in a very safe manner!
What is your favourite thing about your crew mates?
My favourite thing about my crew mates is how kind and thoughtful everyone is. We all work very well together and make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. We are consistently engaged in what we do, and perform our tasks with determination. Not only are we dedicated to our work, but we are also a very comedic bunch. One of our favourite things to do is sit in a circle on the concrete, and sing songs in southern accents (we call ourselves the jitters). There is never a dull moment with the Lac La Biche crew, and I am so grateful to be apart of it.
