Jamie is one of six amazing members on the Grande Prairie crew for 2025!
Tell us a bit about yourself!
Hi, I’m Jamie! I’m going into my 1st year of university. Since I was little, I have loved nature and how humans interact with it, so when my cousin told me about this job, I just had to apply. JFR has been an amazing experience, giving me the chance not only to learn more about nature and the world of forestry, but also how to work with a crew to get the job done. Although I’m not going into environmental studies or conservation in post-secondary, JFR has given me the chance to gain knowledge to best take care of the world around me in my day to day life. Thanks crew and leaders!
What has been your favorite project or activity you’ve done with JFR so far?
My favourite activity was doing the remote first aid certification. It was awesome to learn how to apply first aid to a wilderness situation, especially we did a scenario, made complete an uncooperative patient (shout out to Elora) and a fake bloody wound. The course also gave me much more confidence to know I could help in an emergency situation.
Please describe your JFR leaders with a pop culture/musical reference / meme and explain why.
Anna: Hot n’ Cold by the Chipettes- Anna IS NOT like the person the song is describing, but she really does fit the fun and silly sound of the song that you can’t help but get into.
Emileigh: Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit- Don’t worry, Emileigh doesn’t go into random rages! She does fit the tough and slightly intimidating but actually very fun and awesome-to-be-around vibes the song sounds like.
Frankie: Flow by Cage the Elephant- Frankie really represent the nature-loving and free vibes of this son. She is fun to be around and ready for whatever comes next..
What would you say to someone who is thinking about applying to the program?
I would say the job is worth the application process. It has been an absolutely amazing and fulfilling opportunity so if you have a passion for the outdoors, wildfire or forestry, this job is for you! There will be hard parts both mentally and physically, but that’s by far outweighed by all the amazing and unique opportunities you get. JFR is an opportunity of a lifetime, so I would tell you to take it.
What are your Favorite things about your crew mates?
I love my crew, my favourite thing about them is our balanced dynamic. When it’s time for work, we can be serious and get it done. Then off work, we’ve gotten really close and we can have a lot of fun being silly together. I think we work really well as a team and I couldn’t ask for a better crew.
