NorQuest College

NorQuest College

www.norquest.ca
This proposed Advanced Education in Orthopedics for LPNs (ADVO/LPN) Post-diploma Certificate program is designed to equip licensed practical nurses (LPNs) with the knowledge and skills required for a specialized career in orthopedics. The program consists of four theory courses, one lab course, and a clinical practice. Learners will develop an understanding of the unique role and scope of practice of certified orthopedic nurses. They will build on their nursing skills and knowledge through specific theory courses and experiential learning opportunities. Topics include Orthopedic Anatomy and Physiology, Orthopedic Pathology, Nursing Interventions, and Pediatric Orthopedics. The Orthopedic Specialty Skills Lab provides learners with opportunities to link theory with practice and demonstrate key competencies required of orthopedic nurses prior to their clinical practicum. This program will contribute to a skilled health workforce and provide a pathway for LPNs to a skilled nursing specialization under the Alberta Health Act. As the only advanced practice program in orthopedics for LPNs in Alberta, our graduates will work as nurses with an advanced specialty in orthopedics in health care facilities across the province.
