Kick-Start Your First Year in the Trades. In this certificate program, students will learn to construct and repair buildings and other structures made of wood, wood substitutes, steel and other materials. With experience from the program, learners will have the potential to work in a variety of environments and have trade-specific knowledge to complete tasks to industry standards. Students will have the opportunity to complete a two-week practicum placement and take the first-year apprentice prior learning assessment exam at the conclusion of the program.

Admission Requirements

General Admissions Requirements

All applicants must meet the general admission requirements for Lethbridge Polytechnic programs, as indicated in the Admission section of this calendar.

Academic Requirements

  • Math 10C or Math 10-3, Pure Math 10, or Applied Math 10

  • English Language Arts 10-1 or English Language Arts 10-2

Non-Academic Requirements

  • The ability to lift heavy objects weighing in excess of 25 kilograms

  • Good physical coordination and manual dexterity

  • Mechanical ability

  • Good hearing and colour vision

  • The ability to work as a member of a team and adapt to changing tasks and locations

  • Responsibility to do all work tasks expected of a journeyperson

Note: Applicants who lack the required academic admission requirements can apply to the Academic Upgrading program.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA): If you have experience working in this field of study, you may be eligible for Prior Learning Assessment.


Application Deadline

New applicants are accepted into the Pre-Carpenter program for the Fall (September) or Winter (January) terms.


Student Aid

This program is eligible for full-time post-secondary assistance by Alberta Student Aid for the funding year 2024/08/01 to 2025/07/31*.

  • Books/Supplies/Instruments $350.00 Year One
