Kick-Start Your First Year in the Trades. Powerline technicians play a vital role in ensuring the reliable delivery of electricity to homes and businesses across the country. Our program provides training with a focus on practical hands-on training in the utility electrical field related to overhead and underground distribution installations. You'll cover all of the material in the first-year Powerline Technician Apprenticeship curriculum, spend some time on the poles and receive additional safety training, as well as a two-week practicum placement.

Admission Requirements

General Admissions Requirements

All applicants must meet the general admission requirements for Lethbridge Polytech programs, as indicated in the Admission section of this calendar.

Academic Requirements

  • Successful completion of English 20-2, Math 20-3, and Science 10, pass Apprenticeship Entrance Exam, or passing mark in all five Canadian General Education Development (GED) tests.

  • A valid driver's license (class 3 is recommended).

Non-Academic Requirements

  • This program takes place on a remote campus at the Agriculture & Trades Training Facility (former Animal Husbandry Building) 211034- Hwy 512 on the jail road.
  • Safety and climbing equipment are required to be purchased by students.
  • The ability to lift heavy objects weighing in excess of 25 kilograms.
  • Be comfortable working at heights.
  • Good physical coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Mechanical ability.
  • Good hearing and colour vision.
  • The ability to work at heights and in varying extreme climates.
  • The ability to work as a member of a team and adapt to changing tasks and locations.
  • Responsibility to do all work tasks expected of an apprentice Powerline Technician.

Note: Applicants who lack the required academic admission requirements can apply to the Academic Upgrading program.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA): If you have experience working in this field of study, you may be eligible for Prior Learning Assessment.


Application Deadline

New applicants are accepted into the Pre-Powerline Technician program for the Fall (September) or Winter (January) terms.


Student Aid

This program is eligible for full-time post-secondary assistance by Alberta Student Aid for the funding year 2024/08/01 to 2025/07/31*.

  • Tuition $7,800.00 Year One
  • Books/Supplies/Instruments $4,200.00 Year One
  • Mandatory Fees $986.00 Year One

* Tuition, books, supplies, instruments, and other/mandatory fees are provided to Alberta Student Aid and may be used when processing full-time post-secondary funding applications. The educational costs provided are based on a 100% full-course load and may not reflect current or all educational costs charged by the school.
