A Psychiatric Nurse diploma program is a specialized training and educational pathway designed to enable eligible Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with considerable work experience to develop advanced competencies in mental health care and become a registered psychiatric nurse (RPN). The curriculum emphasizes acquiring in-depth knowledge, refined skills, and extensive experience essential for providing comprehensive psychiatric nursing services. RPNs are educated in the advanced principles of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based care for individuals experiencing a spectrum of mental health challenges, emotional disorders, and psychiatric conditions, utilizing a holistic patient-centered approach.

Admission Requirements
  • Official transcripts showing graduation from an approved Canadian Practical Nurse diploma program.
  • Proof of a Canadian active Practical Nursing License showing membership in good standing.
  • A minimum of 1800 hours of verified employment practice in Canada as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) within the past two years.

Learners must be sufficiently proficient in the English language to provide professional services in English. This requirement is met by providing evidence of being registered as a Licensed Practical Nurse in good standing in Canada within the past two years. For applicants who have not provided services primarily in English, they must demonstrate English language proficiency in ONE of the following:

  • IELTS (academic) with a minimum band score of listening 7.0, reading 6.5, writing 6.5, and speaking 7.0.
  • CELBAN Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses with a minimum band score of listening 10, reading 8, writing 7, speaking 8.

  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) with a minimum band score of speaking 75, listening 73, reading 66, writing 68.
  • Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum band score of speaking B, listening B, reading C+, and writing C+.

Test results that are older than two years are considered expired.
