Question
Plan Your Career

“How can I make the best career choice for my desired lifestyle, work experience, and family situation?”

Answer

What you want from your work and your life will change over time. The world around you will change too. A career-building mindset will help you stay flexible, versatile, and employed in a career (or careers) that you enjoy. It will help you make choices that are in tune with your needs and the lifestyle you want. And it will help you keep pace and adapt to a shifting economy and global marketplace.

Career building starts with knowing what you want from life and understanding the assets you have to work with. Your assets include your strengths, passions, tendencies, traits and skills. They also include your values, interests, abilities, and experiences.

You can use your assets to choose a career for life. Or you can choose a path where your work builds on interests and strengths that change over time—as you learn, grow, and accumulate new skills and experiences.

These days, you have lots of flexibility in choosing how, when, and where you work. You may decide on remote work, or job-sharing, or even self-employment.

Whatever choice you make, it’s important to:

  • Find a work-life balance that’s best for you and your family
  • Keep learning
  • Stay marketable and keep your skills up to date
  • Be curious, persistent, flexible, optimistic, and willing to take a chance on yourself
  • Take advantage of opportunities that come your way
