Emily H

Emily is one of seven incredible members on the Grande Prairie crew for 2026!

Tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m from Tofield, Alberta. I love camping, skiing, and playing basketball, and I was named Athlete of the Year at my high school this year! Growing up on a farm taught me to be well-rounded and gave me a strong work ethic. In the future, I want to pursue a career as a structural firefighter.

What is the biggest thing you learned from being a JFR Crew Member?
This season, I learned how to be a better leader, but I also learned the importance of knowing how to follow and recognizing when to step into each role.

Please describe your JFR leaders & Senior Crew Member with a pop culture/musical reference / meme and explain why.
Taylor:
As Peter Rabbit from Peter Rabbit: She is incredibly driven, hardworking, and brings a great sense of humour to the crew.
Cat: As Moana from Moana: She is intelligent, deeply connected to nature, and loves the ocean.
Kiana: As MacGyver: She thinks on her feet and possesses an amazing amount of outdoor knowledge, demonstrating resourcefulness and improvisation.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about applying to the program?
Joining JFR will change your life. You meet incredible people with fascinating careers and gain valuable knowledge, whether that’s studying your field guide or gaining hands-on experience through work projects. One of the main reasons to join is the lifelong friendships you make along the way. The value of this program is immeasurable, and if you have the opportunity to apply, you should take it!

What has been your favourite project you’ve done with JFR?

My favorite activity with JFR was definitely the Wilderness First Aid course. We didn't just learn basic first aid; we gained practical, real-world skills that we can use every day in this program, whether we're working, camping, or just having fun in nature.

Thanks for sharing Emily! If you want to keep up with Grande Prairie Crew this summer, you can check out their video blogs here!
