Laila

Laila is one of seven incredible members on the Fort McMurray crew for 2026!

Tell us a bit about yourself!
I'm Laila, and I grew up on a small farm west of Olds. I enjoy snowboarding and spending time outdoors with my friends and family.

What is the biggest thing you learned from being a JFR Crew Member?
I've learned a lot through this program so far, but the thing that has stuck with me most is the time I've spent with my crew members. There is so much to learn from one another, and each person on my team brings unique perspectives and experiences to the table.

Please describe your JFR leaders & Senior Crew Member with a pop culture/musical reference / meme and explain why.
My leaders, Rachel and Frankie, along with my SCM, Christina, remind me of the “Three Musketeers”. They lead by example and always have our crew's back when obstacles come up. They truly embody the motto "all for one and one for all." They work incredibly well together and are a constant source of inspiration. They don't just tell us what to do; they lead the way and ensure we are all on the same page. Their leadership has been crucial in helping our crew grow and succeed together.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about applying to the program?
Apply if you're passionate about forestry and wildfire, not just looking for a summer job. It's an amazing experience where you'll find new friends, learn numerous skills, and gain valuable knowledge. I am so grateful to be part of my crew and this program. This opportunity has helped prepare me for my future.

What’s your favourite part of being a “Jiffer”?
Being a Jiffer is a lot of fun. My favorite part of the program so far has been meeting people in the forestry industry and talking with them about their jobs and roles in the field. It's eye-opening to see the many different career opportunities and pathways available to explore.

Thanks for sharing Laila! If you want to keep up with "The Fort" Crew this summer, you can check out their video blogs here!
