Auto Body Technician

Auto body technicians repair and replace damaged motor vehicle structures and body parts, and interior and exterior finishes. In Alberta, this trade has the following trades: auto body prepper, auto body repairer, auto body refinisher and auto body technician. Legislation

Under Alberta’s Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act [pdf], you must have a certificate that is recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training or be a registered apprentice to repair or replace or refinish damaged motor vehicle structures or body parts, or interior or exterior finishes.

What You Need

Terms of apprenticeship vary for some branches of this trade, ranging from 2 to 4 years (12-month periods). Each year usually includes a minimum number of hours of on-the-job training (1,590 to 1,800 hours) and includes 4 to 7 weeks of classroom instruction.

Apprentices must find suitable employers who are willing to hire and train apprentices.
