The BCST - Child and Youth Care major is designed to prepare graduates to meet professional certification requirements through the Child & Youth Care Association of Alberta. The certification process is rigorous in relation to the strict practice/supervision hours, with an educational component of the process, which is reflective of the complex nature of the work undertaken by the Child and Youth Care graduate. You will gain knowledge and practical experience in a variety of areas, including: counselling psychology child and youth development intervention and assessment treatment strategies The BCST - Child and Youth Care major equips students with foundational knowledge that is supported by a balance of General Education courses and work experience components, giving students the option to add a minor to complement their major. Your job title could be: Child and youth care counsellors - you will be counselling and planning activities for young people in a variety of places including shelters, drop-in centres, group homes and public schools. Family support worker - help families in need get back on track by supporting them through counselling and planned activities. Administrator/manager - provide leadership to frontline practitioners and develop programs to support them in having a positive impact on children, youth and families. The Bachelor of Child Studies (BCST) program will continue with the laddering tradition for CYCC and ELCC diploma graduates by offering application into the third year of the degree for a small cohort. Course transfer for students who have completed an Early Learning and Child Care or Child and Youth Care diploma at another Alberta institution and wish to come to Mount Royal for degree completion will be evaluated on a course by course basis.
