Northern Lakes College is a community college serving over 1,500 students in northern rural communities. Administration campuses include Grouard and Slave Lake. With learning centres in over 17 communities, Northern Lakes College serves students in an area that covers a quarter of Alberta, but has less than four per cent of the population. Students may take academic upgrading, certificate and diploma programs, university transfer courses and workforce development courses. Many programs focus on health, the oil and gas industry and apprenticeship trades. !span>
Northern Lakes strives to break down the barriers of location and educational experience by offering diverse programs. To reach students throughout the region, Northern Lakes uses distance learning methods, such as online technologies and videoconferencing. Partnerships with local First Nations and Métis settlements, businesses and industries allow Northern Lakes to offer new programs to meet community and industry needs. !span>
The Grouard campus has a student residence, student family housing, cafeteria and gymnasium. The Slave Lake campus has a cafeteria, leisure and aquatic centre, gymnasium and a new student residence.!span>

Eligible students are provided by high schools in the school districts. !span>!span>
Pre-Employment students must meet the Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) standard admissions requirements including English 20-2, Math 20-3, Science 10. However, dual credit students are NOT required to be registered with AIT. Upon successful completion of all core courses, dual credit students are then eligible to write the 1st period electrical apprenticeship exam. !span>!span>!span>
All other individuals who want to become an apprentice must meet the following academic requirements: !span>!span>!span>
Route 1: Applicants must have completed Grade 9; !span>!span>!span>
Route 2: Applicants must have received a passing mark on the Apprenticeship Level 2 entrance exam. !span>!span>!span>
Applicants must also be hired as an Apprentice with an employer and have their apprenticeship number proving they are registered with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. !span>!span>!span>
Applicants qualified by Alberta Apprenticeship may apply no later than one business day before the course begins.!span>
This program is eligible for full-time post-secondary assistance by Student Aid Alberta for the funding year 2018/08/01 to 2019/07/31*.
