The Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedic (EMT-P) Program is a two-year Diploma program designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to practice emergency pre-hospital medical/trauma care and to function as a vital member of the health care team. The program is designed to prepare graduates to perform the competencies identified in the National Occupational Competency Profile (NOCP) for Advanced Care Paramedics, and the Alberta Occupational Competency Profile (AOCP) for EMT-P and to meet requirements for the ACP licensure exam for EMT-P. Graduates of the program will demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations and adhering to the EMS Code of Ethical behavior, as well as technical proficiency in the skills necessary to fulfill the role of an entry-level EMT-P.The theory portion of the program is delivered over the course of 4 academic terms. The program includes a hospital, intermediate and advanced care practicum. The program provides in the areas of patient assessment and emergency treatment. Students develop critical thinking skills allowing them to develop an appropriate differential diagnosis and treatment pathway for their patients. Students are responsible for costs related to travel and accommodations for the onsite sessions and practicums. Students are required to have an Apple iPad to complete the programs.

Admission Requirements
EMT Certificate or current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics as an EMT.

Applicants must have credits in the following courses, or their equivalent:
  • Biology 30 (60%) or credit in ANPY 1000 (50%) or ANPY 0190 (60%) or Biology 0190 (60%)
  • English 30-1 or equivalent (60%), or English 30-2 or equivalent (70%), or English 0190 (60%) or an assessed English equivalency
  • Credit in Math 20-1 or equivalent (50%), or Math 20-2 or equivalent (60%), or Math 0190 (60%). Students must submit all official post-secondary transcipts upon application.

Distance Delivery Options

This program is delivered using a full-time blended delivery, the program is comprised of classroom, practical/laboratory, clinical and field placement and will use a mix of distributed learning technologies to support the theory portions of the program including Moodle and Blackboard Collaborate.


Student Aid

This program is eligible for full-time post-secondary assistance by Alberta Student Aid for the funding year 2024/08/01 to 2025/07/31*.
