Kick-Start Your First Year in the Trades Not an apprentice? Not a problem. Kick-start your career in the trades in our Powerline Technician and Power System Electrician program. Designed for those who are not yet employed or apprenticed within the trades, the Powerline Technician and Power System Electrician program provides the first year of the Alberta Powerline Technician Apprenticeship curriculum as well as various safety certificates and practical training directly relating to the powerline technician trade, including Standard First Aid/CPR and air brake endorsement. In just 14 weeks, you'll receive valuable theoretical and hands-on training to enhance your chances of gaining employment in the powerline industry. You'll gain experience in pole climbing, the use of trade specific tools, RBD setup, groundman duties and basic overhead line construction techniques. With the co-operation of business partners, you'll also have the opportunity to apply your new skills during a practical field experience.

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements:  

  • Successful completion of English 20-2, Math 20-3, and Science 10, pass Apprenticeship Entrance Exam, or pass mark in all five Canadian General Educational Development (GED) tests.
  • A Valid driver’s license (class 3 is recommended).

Curriculum: Upon successful completion of the Powerline Technician and Power System Electrician program, you will:

  • be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge related to the powerline industry acquired through hands-on training.
  • be prepared to write the First Year Apprenticeship examination.
  • be prepared to be employed within the powerline technician industry in Alberta.
  • have learned valuable employability skills.
  • obtain a Letter of Completion.


Non-Academic Requirements: Course fees do not include general supplies, apprenticeship exam fees ($150), or climbing gear and tools. Students in pre-employment programs can now apply for loans and grants through Student Aid Alberta. This program takes place on a remote campus at the Agriculture & Trades Training Facility (former Animal Husbandry Building) 211034-Hwy 512 on the jail road.

Student Aid

This program is eligible for full-time post-secondary assistance by Alberta Student Aid for the funding year 2024/08/01 to 2025/07/31*.

  • Books/Supplies/Instruments $4,200.00 Year One
  • Mandatory Fees $1,137.00 Year One

* Tuition, books, supplies, instruments, and other/mandatory fees are provided to Alberta Student Aid and may be used when processing full-time post-secondary funding applications. The educational costs provided are based on a 100% full-course load and may not reflect current or all educational costs charged by the school.
