Established in 1968, Portage College serves over 1,000 full-time students each year. The corporate centre is located in Lac La Biche, with regional service centres in Cold Lake and St. Paul, and community campuses in Frog Lake, Saddle Lake, and Boyle. 

Portage offers more than 50 certificate and diploma programs in areas such as academic upgrading and job readiness, business, forestry and natural resources, general studies, health and wellness, human services, Native cultural arts, trades and technical, and university studies. In addition, many courses transfer to other colleges and universities.

Portage College provides small class sizes to allow more time with instructors. The Learning Assistance Centre offers educational support to help students achieve academic success. The Lac La Biche campus includes a student residence, full service cafeteria, family housing, and a student activity centre. The College is a strong competitor in ice hockey, and offers recreational facilities for students, as well.

Admission Requirements

Program Description: The Emergency Medical Technology - Paramedic (EMT-P) program is the top of EMS training in Alberta. The Portage College EMT-P Program is offered as a full-time blended Distance Education model. This format allows practicing Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) who are unable to leave their family, employment and/or community commitments, the opportunity to pursue a Paramedic diploma. By using the multi-modal approach to instruction, students can do the majority of work from home. There are eleven mandatory on-site weeks to confirm the practical skills part of the training. The training is completed with two ambulance placements and a clinical placement. Successful completion of this program will qualify the student to apply to write the Alberta College of Paramedics provincial registration examination. Entrance Requirements: Grade 12 with minimum 50 per cent in English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2 (30 or 33), Chemistry 30 or Biology 30 or other 30 level Science, Math 20 or 23, Math 20-1 or 20-2,  Math 20 (Applied or Pure). Must be a registered EMT with the Alberta College of Paramedics, ITLS/PHILS within two years of course start date, CPR level C within one year, Criminal Record Check Waiver form, Criminal Record Check, Immunization record, medical form, Class 4 Driver's License and resume highlighting field experience. Must be 18 years of age or older. Must have an Ipod touch or Iphone for use with Comp-tracker program used for practicum competency tracking. Must attend onsite program orientation. Completion of Year 1 is required to enter Year 2. Distance Delivery Options

Multi-modal instruction in a computer-mediated delivery format. Ten on-site training weeks with 3 practicums.

This program is eligible for full-time post-secondary assistance by Alberta Student Aid for the funding year 2022/08/01 to 2023/07/31*.
