Portage College Pre-Apprenticeship HET Program aims to help learners prepare to enter into an apprenticeship or find entry-level employment at the end of their training. The program seeks to close the skills gap by creating access to training for individuals interested in apprenticeship education by generating opportunities for individuals to develop the skills required for success in an apprenticeship program Students begin the program with Academic Upgrading. They will complete courses that will allow them entrance into a Category B Trade (HET). Students will be enrolled in a full course load of two core courses (Math and English), as well as three option courses to support their employment skills (CTR 1010, CTR2010, HCS 3000). Students will complete Math 20-3 and ELA 20-2 in order to meet the entrance requirements for HET, and in doing so, will bypass the need to write their Trades Entrance exam. Students with academic skills above that of the Grade 11 level in either Math or ELA will be able to take a higher- level Math or English class in order to better develop their skills as they prepare to enter HET. In addition, students will be enrolled in Job Preparation (CTR 1010), Job Maintenance (CTR 2010), and Workplace Safety (HCS 3000) to support their workplace skills and prepare them to safely enter the trade. Students who have already completed CTR 1010, 2010, and/of HCS 3000 will be able to further their training by taking an information processing course to further develop their computer skills for employment. After completing the Academic Upgrading training portion and receiving the necessary pre-requisites, students will be enrolled in Pre-employment HET. Programming would follow Portage College's current pre-employment 16-Week program, and would include safety training such as WHMIS. To finalize the program, students will complete an 8-week work experience placement that is trade appropriate.
