Crew Leaders/Sub Leaders

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic, dependable and outdoor-oriented individuals to lead our JFR crews.

For each JFR Crew, there is one Leader position and one Sub Leader position available. Our Leaders and Sub Leaders work in pairs and supervise a crew of 16 - 18 year olds. Meet our 2023 leaders here!

Responsibilities

Crew Leader’s primary responsibilities include:
Direction and supervision and direction of a Sub Leader and 6 - 8 Crew Members
Designing a safe and rewarding work/educational program schedule
Maintaining OH&S safety standards and procedures
Providing feedback, organizing evaluations and addressing situations as they arise
Promoting team building and a positive outdoor experience
A Crew Sub Leader’s primary responsibilities include:
Assisting in the direction and supervision and direction of a Sub Leader and 6 - 8 Crew Members
Designing a safe and rewarding work/educational program schedule
Maintaining OH&S safety standards and procedures
Projecting and conducting maintenance and inventory inspections of equipment
Promoting team building and a positive outdoor experience

Qualifications

Leaders are expected to come to training with some credentials and youth work experience. Minimum requirements include:

  • Post-secondary student or graduate (or relevant career experience) in outdoor education, forestry, biology, adventure tourism, environmental science or related field.
  • Class 5 driver’s license or Provincial equivalent. Please provide a copy upon application.
  • Defensive driving certificate. Please provide a copy with your application.
  • Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certifications or equivalent. Please provide a copy with your application.
  • Experience in outdoor leadership and education.
  • All participants must meet a minimum physical fitness standard.

Each successful applicant must undergo a criminal and vulnerable-sector record check to be considered for employment.

Training

All of our leaders take part in an extensive 14 day training program at the Hinton Training Centre. JFR program staff and other professionals organize training sessions to provide leaders with new skills, safety preparedness tips and program insights.

Projects

You and your co-leader will work together to plan and organize JFR summer to remember! The three core elements of Stewardship, Leadership, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge are taken into consideration when planning a summer calendar. Our Crew Leaders network with area forestry staff, local organizations, industry, and government to put together a summer full of educational, meaningful and challenging projects.

The summer is full of work projects where members gain experience. We aim for a 70% work projects and 30% educational projects split.
