Crew Leaders/Sub Leaders

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic, dependable and outdoor-oriented individuals to lead our JFR crews.

There is one Leader position available and one Sub Leader position available for each JFR crew. Our Leaders and Sub Leaders work in pairs and supervise a crew of 16-18 year olds.


A Crew Leader’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Supervision and direction of a Sub Leader and 8 crew members
  • Developing and implementing safety standards and procedures
  • Designing a safe, rewarding work and educational program schedule
  • Organizing evaluations and addressing any situations with staff
  • Promoting team building
  • Promoting a positive outdoor experience 

A Crew Sub Leader’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the direction and supervision of all crew members, work projects, recreational outings and general camp situations
  • Designing a safe, rewarding work and educational program schedule
  • Projecting and conducting maintenance and inventory inspections of all equipment
  • Implementing safety standards and procedures
  • Promoting team building
  • Promoting a positive outdoor experience


Leaders are expected to come to training with some credentials and youth work experience. Minimum requirements include:

  • Post-secondary student or graduate (or relevant career experience) in outdoor education, forestry, biology, adventure tourism, environmental science or related field.
  • Full Class 5 driver’s licence or Provincial equivalent. Please provide a copy upon application.
  • Defensive driving certificate. Please provide a copy with your application.
  • Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certifications. Please provide a copy with your application.
  • Experience with leading and participating in outdoor education.
  • All participants must meet a minimum physical fitness standard.

Each successful applicant must undergo a criminal and vulnerable-sector record check to be considered for employment.


All of our leaders take part in an extensive 2-week training program at the Hinton Training Centre.

The JFR program staff and other professionals organize training sessions to provide leaders with new skills, safety preparedness tips and program insights. Training is highlighted by a 3-day outtrip into the Wilmore Wilderness Park.
