Program Description: The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) program is designed to provide entry level pre-hospital training for individuals wishing to start a career in emergency medical services (EMS). The format of the Portage College EMR program offers individuals a unique alternative to traditional full-time on-campus programs by providing multi-modal instruction in a computer-mediated delivery format so students can remain in their home communities for the majority of the training period. Students attend a 3 day (Friday-Sunday) on-site orientation followed by 8 weeks of online learning. During those 8 weeks students will attend 3 more weekend sessions. The final weekend will be the testing weekend. The program includes - training in pharmacology, glucometric testing, Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) management, traction splints, Nasal Pharyngeal Airway and pulse oximetry as per the Alberta Occupational Competency Profile. Under the Alberta Ambulance Services Act, registration as an EMR is the minimum level of training required to work on an ambulance. Entrance Requirements: Valid CPR (level C) within six months and Standard First Aid Certificate within one year. Must be minimum 18 years of age.
