These days, a successful work search requires marketing yourself as the best candidate for the job. There are lots of resources available to help you.
Start by reviewing some work search basics:
- Get organized and get prepared. Set up a work search email account. Identify what skills, abilities, and accomplishments you can offer an employer. Identify what you need and want from a job, and research occupations that might suit you.
- Find job opportunities. The following resources can help you get started:
- Check out OCCinfo for Alberta job postings, labour market information, and detailed info on more than 550 occupations.
- Use job search sites to link directly to employers’ or recruiters’ websites.
- Contact an employment agency to help you find work.
- Check Alberta’s Employment and Training Services Directory to find a program or service that can help you find a job.
- Tap into your network.
- Create your work search tools. Get your resumé, cover letter, references, and job portfolio in order.
- Apply for work. Understand what employers are looking for in a job application, and learn to send your resumé in multiple formats.
- Ace your interviews. Prepare answers for common interview questions and prepare questions to ask the employer. Practise your delivery so you’re relaxed and confident. And follow up with a thank you.
- Stay positive. Set realistic expectations and learn from your disappointments.
- Wrap up. When you’re offered a job, take the time to negotiate a reasonable job offer. And don’t burn any bridges when you leave your old job.
